ABSTRACT

F-1 is used for qualifying academic and language programs at approved schools. Admission, SEVIS registration, and Form I-20 are essential, but an I-20 does not guarantee visa issuance.

01

Approved school, SEVIS, and Form I-20

An SEVP-certified school enters the student’s information in SEVIS and issues Form I-20. The consular officer still determines whether the applicant has established eligibility for the visa.

02

Three questions that should be clear

The applicant may need to address academic preparation, funding for tuition and living costs, and the temporary purpose of the stay.

  • Why this program and institution?
  • How will tuition and living expenses be funded?
  • How does the program connect to the applicant’s professional plan?
03

A visa is not status and does not guarantee entry

A visa permits travel to a port of entry and a request for admission. CBP decides admission. After entry, maintaining F-1 status and following the applicable rules are separate and continuing responsibilities.

04

Interview preparation

Preparation is not memorization. The applicant should be able to explain the program, funding, and plans naturally and consistently with the forms and documents.
